About the venue
Our old barge is located on the river Spree, right in the center of Berlin (DE), yet in a slightly "secret" area next to a lush park, at the historical harbor of Mitte-Berlin.
The barge is the current location of our Contemporary art gallery and art residency, which we established in 2016. The focus of the gallery is primarily on performing arts, site-specific installations and experimental sound works.
Both the exhibition and performance spaces on the barge can be rented for art or business events. We also have a range of opportunities for weddings, BBQs, concerts, art openings, film screenings, stage performances, theater productions or film and photo shoots. With a direct view on the iconic TV tower and Old City Hall, the barge has kept its original features inside and outside. Original wooden floorboards, uneven and creaky, and rusty steel walls are some of the unique features of the exhibition space.
Nearby, a film equipment rental agency is easy to reach by car in 7 minutes.
Exhibition space: 130 m² (the entire roof can be removed)
Performance space: 100 m² (the roof can be partially removed)
Small cabin/flat: 25 m²
History of the barge:
Built in 1910 in Fürstenberg an der Oder, the barge was initially operating under the name Ida and used for transporting coal to Charlottenburg. After the Second World War, the 58-meter long cargo ship was renamed, it's new name meaning “homeland”. Until the 90s, the ship was moving other boats, sand and chippings. It served for a cultural purpose for the first time in 2002, when German sculptor Christiane Möbus chose it for her project. In March 2018, it became the main exhibition space and artist residency of our Contemporary art gallery.
